Safety Reversal

Since 1993 garage door openers have been required to be equipped with a safety reversing mechanism. If your opener and remote are more than 15 years old, it’s time for a replacement. Openers made before 1993 have fixed security codes that can easily be accessed by would-be intruders. New ones have rolling codes that change with every click of the remote. As a further precaution, shut off the opener’s power switch whenever you leave on vacation.

This feature utilizes two sensors about six inches above floor level on both sides of the door. When any object, such as a child or pet, runs through the light beam created by these sensors while the door is closing, the door immediately stops and reverses.

If your garage door opener does not have a safety reversing feature, or if the one it does have no longer works, replacing the opener is highly recommended.

Noise Control

Does your garage door opener wake people up or otherwise disrupt the household because it makes so much noise? If so, a new opener will almost certainly be quieter.

The original style of garage door opener opened and closed with a chain drive. If you can see something that looks like a bicycle chain near the motor unit of your opener, consider replacing it with a screw drive or belt drive garage door opener. Even a newer model chain drive unit will likely be quieter than an older model.

When your garage door opener suddenly stops operating properly, the explanation and solution are usually pretty easy to deal with.

Battery Backup

One of the big inconveniences of a power outage is often the inability to operate the garage door opener. Garage door openers are now available with battery backup systems that will kick in automatically when you lose electrical power and last up to 72 hours.

Burglar Deterrent

Older garage door openers were vulnerable to thieves. Because their remote controls functioned with a fixed code, someone with a special device could sit outside your house and find the code, allowing them to open the garage door.

New garage door openers have a “rolling code” feature, which changes the code every time the unit is used.

Bad guys can no longer duplicate the code and get into your garage uninvited.

Common Problems

Here are the most common problems. For adjustments and repairs, Call Bayside Garage Doors and we’ll have your garage door opener back in the best possible operating condition.

  1. Garage door opener does not operate with either the remote or the wall switch
Possible Solution: The power source has probably been disrupted. Make sure the motor unit is plugged in. Check the circuit breaker, fuse or GFCI.
  2. Garage door won’t open or close all the way
Possible Solution: See if the door is binding when raised and lowered manually.
  3. Garage door reverses immediately after hitting floor
Possible Solution: The safety sensor probably needs adjusting.
  4. Garage door reverses before hitting floor
Possible Solution: The close force or safety sensor probably needs adjusting.
  5. The garage door motor is running but nothing is happening.
Possible Solution: The gears in the opener are most likely stripped.
  6. The garage door won’t open or close with remote control
Possible solutions: (1) Move closer to the door (you might be out of range); (2) Make sure that the antenna on the motor unit is hanging down; (3) If the door functions fine with the wall switch, replace the battery in the remote; (4) Reprogram the remote.

Accessories

In addition to the variety of openers, we also offer accessories to complement your opener.

  • Multi-Function Control Panel
  • Outside Wireless Keypads
  • Laser Parking Accessory
  • Keychain Remote Control
  • Garage Door Monitors
